Art of the Day

I've been doing more drawing lately.  Jen put me onto this book, Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain.  It's got some great exercises in it.  The image above (click to enlarge) was drawn while looking at a photograph turned upside-down, so that my left brain wouldn't interfere and say, "oh, you're drawing a hand.  Don't worry, I know what a hand looks like."  Instead, you just draw the shapes that are right in front of you, without worrying about whether they're hands or eyes or shadows or smudges.

My best life drawing teacher used to come by and look at our drawings and ask us "are you really drawing what you're seeing? Look again at this area here" and then he'd indicate where you'd drawn something that was supposed to be a hand but didn't look anything at all like what was in front of you. It was a good class.

Then the school forced him into retirement and hired somebody whose work had been shown in galleries in New York City, which proves that drawing what you see doesn't get you anywhere! The end.
