Happy Number 9 Day

Queued up with some other nerds at Easy Street last night 'round midnight to purchase one of only 10,000 remastered Beatles in Mono box sets like a good little consumer. I've only made it through side one of Revolver, but so far I agree with Geoff Emerick.

I don't get it. Why wouldn't they just take the mono mix job that they spent so much time on, and then make the stereo version by just panning the instruments in the mono mix (making reasonable panning choices, not like the fucked up hard-panning that they did as a gag back then)? Emerich makes it sound like they completely started from scratch (and not spending much effort) on the stereo mixes.

It's a good question, and I could probably torture an answer out of my limited understanding of the tech, but instead I think you should just read this exhaustive article which (so far, haven't finished reading) seems to meticulously parse the cost/benefit of both new versions of all the albums.

Also, anyone who has read any part of this has nerd dust all over their eyeballs. Sorry!
