John Cage's 4'33" on Banjo

Last week in my Music & Philosophy class we were trying to answer the question, "What is music?" We talked a lot about John Cage. And I performed John Cage's piece 4'33" on the banjo for my students.

HERE is the recording of it.

It sounds like I might have played a little too long, but I think maybe I didn't start right away. Other than that, I think I performed it flawlessly.

  1. I wouldn't say flawlessly - there was a missed run at 2:15. I'm not such a fan of the room tone, either. It *did* have a lot of emotional punch, though.

  2. I've never heard it performed on banjo before. It adds a whole new dimension.

  3. Never before have my ears heard such sweet tones.

It's a bit different than I'm used to, perhaps even rushed at a few points, but other than that, wonderful performence. I only wish I could have seen it live...
